Album Rating System

HOW AN ALBUM EARNS ITS SCORE

Album Mania scores each record by starting with track-by-track ratings, then folding in four bigger-picture dimensions: overall feel, personal connection, creativity, and replayability. It is less about pretending music is objective and more about staying consistent about what actually matters to me when I rate an album.

Weighted Inputs

The five core ingredients

Weighted Track Average

25%

The song-by-song foundation of the whole system. This captures how strong the album is at its most granular level before the broader judgement calls kick in.

Built from every track score, with a small lift for 5-star favourites.

Overall Album Rating

25%

The holistic read. If you had to summarise the record in one instinctive score, this is it.

Manual 1-5 score for the album as a complete front-to-back experience.

Personal Connection

20%

The emotional weight category. This asks whether the album genuinely matters to you rather than just impressing you from a distance.

Does it connect to your life, your memories, or your repeat listening habits?

Creativity & Innovation

15%

The artistry score. Ambition, originality, risk-taking, structure, lyrics, and sonic imagination all live here.

Albums get credit for doing something genuinely interesting, not just familiar.

Replayability

15%

A check on how easily the record fits into real life. Can you throw it on again in six months and still want to stay with it?

Technical quality alone is not enough if the album is hard to live with.

Why This System

What does this system do?

1

Stay personal

The system is not pretending to be objective. It is designed to capture how a record feels to me.

2

Balance micro and macro

Song-by-song scoring catches the little things, while the broader dimensions stop the system from treating an album like a playlist.

3

Let peaks count

Truly favourite tracks deserve to matter, so 5-star songs get a small bonus rather than being flattened into a plain mean average.

4

Keep it honest

No single category can run away with the whole result, which helps the final score stay explainable even when the judgement is subjective.
